There are two basic ways to manage hedge fund assets; single prime and multi-prime. While the single prime model has historically been used to handle smaller funds, the multi-prime model has been the purview of more substantial funds. However, there has been a recent shift towards multi-prime management for all types of fund sizes.

The multi-prime model presents investors and brokers with a number of key advantages, regardless of fund size. These advantages include; counterparty risk diversification, a greater number of opportunities in global markets, and enhanced research ability.
